17 March 1959
On 17 March 1959, one week after the rebellion
against the Chinese occupying forces had broken out, he fled from Tibet
under bizarre and hazardous conditions and reached the border to India at
the end of March, where he has been living since. "Since then he has been
residing there, in order to give approximately one hundred thousand Tibetan
refugees an identity and to provide his support. He represents a sign of
hope for the six million Tibetans living under Chinese rule. The Dalai Lama
has carried out many trips to Europe, America, Japan and other countries
to preach the message of love, peace and tolerance.

Teaching of the Dalai Lama
He is also a shining example of humanity and
inter-religious communication and understanding for Hindus, Christians
and unbelievers, on the basis of a wisdom which only a profoundly spiritual
experience can bestow upon us. For Buddhists he represents Avalokitesvara,
the Boddhisatva of mercifulness and compassion, and thus the living form
of an aspect of the universality of Buddha." His line of reincarnations
go back to King Songtsen Gampo, who was regarded as being the emanation
of Avalokitesvara. (written by Dilgo Khyentse).
