For the music, Grube and Breitenstein turned to the young German composer Oliver Heise, whose reputation as a musician of note had been secured when he received top honours in a film composer's competition in Bonn, Germany. Heise's large-scale, complex score made use of the full Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London, with special solos for sitar, tabla, Asian flutes, and a piano which Heise himself played.
